Here is a list of reasons people were committed to the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum from 1864 to 1889. Seems women were much more susceptible to institutionalization than men for things such as: marriage of son, imaginary female trouble, rumor of husband murder (just a rumor???). Men could be admitted for things such as: falling from a horse in war, business nerves, excitement as officer. Or you could even be committed for your religious enthusiasm, political excitement, or your parents being cousins (which was pretty common back then). It's pretty sobering to think you could be committed for such banal things.
