A B-hemolytic streptococcus bacteria. Erysipelas causes affected areas of
skin to turn bright red and become slightly swollen. The swollen blotches
have a distinct border and slowly expand into the surrounding skin. The
lesions are most commonly seen on the face, scalp, hands, and legs. They feel
hot to the touch and the patient is feverish. Centuries ago erysipelas
epidemics caused severe, often fatal infections (St Anthony's Fire). Today
erysipelas is a rather mild and relatively rare infection that clears up
rapidly when penicillin or other antibiotics are taken.

Antiquated Descriptions of Diseases & Illnesses
The following is a list (by no means a complete list) of illnesses and diseases which can be seen in older listings of newspaper death notices, burial records, and mortality schedules. These terms have been gleaned from sources such as Riverius Reformatus ( Practise of Physick ) published in 1706, an English translation of an earlier Latin text by Lazare Reviere 1589 - 1655 and Principles and Practise of Medicine" 1892 by Doctors Sir William Osler & Thomas McCrea.
